McGuigans To Reunite

It has been over 160 years since two brothers, Henry and James McGuigan left their beloved family and home in Ireland for an incredible adventure searching for gold in the far distant land of Australia. I am travelling from Australia to our ancestral homeland to meet McGuigan relations living in and around Maghera Northern Ireland. Our McGuigan family has lived in this area since the 1700's and possibly even earlier. This historic journey back to Ireland with its majestic scenery, inspiring people and history promises to be filled with excitement and amazing discoveries culminating in the gathering of the clan at Maghera on Sunday 22nd July 2012 for a day of joyous celebration. My much anticipated adventure begins on Friday 29th June 2012......

Day 3. Belfast Northern Ireland Sunday 1st July 2012

Yesterday whilst we were in Newry Mary was driving past this bridge and saw the sign O'Hagan Bridge. Hopefully this will be the first of many undiscovered treasures to record in our family history archive. We will have to research this bridge as it will be named after either one of our first cousins, Lord Thomas O'Hagan or Mother Mary O'Hagan so will keep you posted on what we find out. Amazing really as Mary had no previous knowledge of this bridge and it was only that she drove down this street looking for something else. Not far from this bridge we saw another huge sign, McGuigan's Bar! We didnt have time to take a photo of the pub but hopefully we will get back sometime soon to record it - it looked great..... The photo of Mary and I taken by me is a little off centre but was taken in front of the OHagan bridge sign. My first impressions of Ireland are of being very familiar, the scenery looks just like Millbrook, Springbank, Gordon etc the areas of Victoria where I grew up. The rolling hills are so very green and dotted with stone cottages. The people look similar to all those I have known most of my life - isnt DNA incredible! I am feeling right at home and cant wait to get out exploring Belfast today after having a wonderful nights sleep I am itching to get going. We are just about to attend Mass at the historic St Malachys Catholic Church in Belfast then its on to our walking tour of the Belfast Titanic Quarter. After lunch we will go to the new Titanic Museum which looks fabulous and I can see it from our apartment balcony. I will post again tonight after our big day out.
